Growth

July 20th, 2007

This week has been hectic to say the least. I’ve been very busy getting used to my “new digs” (this blog here!) and opening up to the idea of being more successful and more creative. My work with the store has gone in waves, up and down and very inconsistent. I want to change that and resolved to do so recently. So I’ve made changes to reflect that. I started by putting myself on a “work schedule”. I am now thinking more in terms of expanding into new designs, new ideas and new places. As I looked over my skirts I noticed it was well past time for a new design. I sat out in my garden (a rather sad place as I live in record breaking Phoenix AZ and my plants can hardly stand it!) and looked at some of my new sprouts, trying so hard to push through. An idea started to turn in my head. I got an image of a sprout appliquéd on a skirt front and I moved forward from there.

I wanted something simple, nothing too outlandish; after all…a sprout is a humble thing. I wanted the whole skirt to be a solid color, with some patchwork highlights. I also wanted to try a new fabric, move away from my tried and true calico cotton. I felt that the earth had inspired me and that moved into the idea for an elements set of skirts. So first will come the earth skirt, next is the water, followed by fire and last but not least air.

I thought that maybe a message might be nice…but what should it say? What does the earth say? Leave it to life to smack you in the face with something perfect. “Grow” I find that I grow in spurts, moving quickly and rapidly, and then settling to absorb it all. Right now I’m in the middle of a growth spurt and couldn’t be happier. I am filled with pride to look at my store. I love to see my ideas come to fruition and work with a fervor to get things completed. When its done the whole world around me knows because its all I can talk about! I truly love what I’m doing and it makes me so very happy. I shall shout it to the roof tops. I wish this love for everyone. It really isn’t work at all, almost feels odd to call it “work”.

With all the growth comes more responsibility. I honor that and have started to make changes to my clothes to match my commitment to quality. Everything is now being pre-shrunk in eco friendly home made laundry detergent. I’ve moved my sewing supplies and crafting space into a smoke free, cat free room. (though we do own cats so I can’t make it “cat proof” just that no cats are allowed in my craft room)  I feel good about the changes that are being made and I’m sure that I’m going to continue to be proud of whats to come.

I simply can’t wait to show you the new skirt. For those that are wondering, my Wordless Wednesday picture was a little glimpse at the work I’ve done on the Earth skirt. It’s a labor of love and inspiration. Its true to its name…”grow”
